Swear can see dandruff on this Cormorant but using the Raynox telephoto took some getting use to, not because the lens was heavy, it was WINDY today! Ended up balancing on fence and it worked pretty well, just couldn't be as spontaneous. Found today rewarding and frustrating in the same breath.

Got great details with the feathers and never knew they had a BLUE eye!And now i know what kind of cormorant it is too, by the purple plumage Hope you enjoy!

Neotropic Cormorant

A bird of the tropical waterways of Central and South America, the Neotropic Cormorant reaches the upper limits of its range in Texas and occasionally, the Great Plains. Although it superficially resembles North America's other freshwater cormorant, the Double-crested Cormorant, the Neotropic Cormorant stands apart in various aspects of behavior, as well as range.

Adult Description

Large, dark waterbird.
Long body and long neck.
Medium-sized bill is blunt or hooked at tip.
Purplish black plumage.
Throat and base of bill yellowish.

Immature Description
Mostly brownish, especially on neck and breast. Bill mostly dull brown.

found this great site, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology

Hello Brenda, yep..your zoom lens is working fine!!
Great close-up and very unusual, yet eye catching composition. Love the bright blue eye and all the wonderful detail you managed to capture. I also like the way the sun is glistening off of it's feathers. Great work!!
Ron

This surely ranks as a very unconventional but highly appealing portraiture of a Cormorant, Brenda. That one can use a zoom lens in such an innovative way is a revelation for me.
The picture showcases, extremely successfully, the most significant aspects of bird portraiture -- the head and the eye. The close-up of plumage reaches yet another great; I have never seen such vivid details on the plumage of a bird ever before here on TN.
Congratulations on your creativity and thanks for sharing this gem!
Ram

Hello Brenda, Really great close up of the cormorant. Excellent POV which creates a very artistic image. Super sharp details. Very spectacular,
Tfs,

Impressive portrait Brenda! The framing, the composition, the colors and the sharpness are excellent
Regards,
Christodoulos

nice crop an interesting composition, wish you all the best with your new toy. A sturdy base like a tripod will always improve sharpness with a tele, so if you have the chance to support the camera, use it :) Saying that, this one has perfect focus on the eye

Hi Brenda
Cormorants are beautiful birds, you just need a closer look at the eye and the metallic feathers, both very well shown here.
The only improvement in this picture could be the bg which is a bit heterogenous, but hey difficult to choose...

Brenda,
I know how hard it is to photograph a cormorant up close. At least here in Alabama, they are very cautious of humans and keep their distance. This is a very good picture. I like the color and details. You have a very good les. Gary

Hi Brenda,

Hello Brenda,

You're capturing well this Cormorant by a good Macro, a good focus and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the lovely posture of this Cormorant. It's also great for the sharpness of the wing, and it's good at color contrast.

Kind regards,
mikio
