The past weekend we were caravan camping at the Marulani Kloof resort near Loskop Dam. When I heard the call, I fetched my camera and followed this little fella to a tree. He gave me all the time in the world to take about 120 shots in different poses. Unfortunately all were taken free hand as I do not have a tripod for this lens.
Enjoy and comments are welcome.

I read the forum regarding sharpening and it was very informative thanks, but I am still trying my best. Professional PP is still a new area to me.
Best regards,

The Woodland Kingfisher (Halcyon senegalensis) is a tree kingfisher.
Bosveldvisvanger [Afrikaans]; iNkotha (also applied to Little bee-eater), uNongozolo [Zulu]; Muningi (generic term for kingfisher) [Kwangali]; Tshololwana (generic term for kingfisher) [Tsonga]; Senegalese ijsvogel [Dutch]; Martin-chasseur du Sénégal [French]; Senegalliest [German]; Pica-peixe-dos-bosques [Portuguese]; Halcyon senegaloides (Mangrove kingfisher) Manglietvisvanger [Afrikaans]; uNongozolo [Zulu]; Mangrove-ijsvogel [Dutch]; Martin-chasseur des mangroves [French]; Mangroveliest [German]; Pica-peixe-dos-mangais [Portuguese]

This is a medium-sized kingfisher, 20–23 cm in length. The adult has a bright blue back, wing panel and tail. Its head, neck and underparts are white, and its shoulders are black. The flight of the Woodland Kingfisher is rapid and direct. The large bill has a red upper mandible and black lower mandible. The legs are bright red. Some birds may have greyish heads, causing confusion with Mangrove Kingfisher.
However, the lores are dark, creating a dark stripe through the eye (the stripe does not extend through the eye in Mangrove Kingfisher), and the underwing, primaries and secondaries are black with white underwing coverts (there is a black carpal patch on the white coverts in Manrgove Kingfisher). The inner webs of the base of the flight feathers are white, creating an indistinct white wingbar (white completely absent from wings in Mangrove Kingfisher). The breast is white (tends to be much greyer in Mangrove Kingfisher). The sexes are similar, but juveniles are duller than adults and have a brown bill.

Distribution and habitat
The Woodland Kingfisher is widely distributed in tropical Africa south of the Sahara and from Pretoria northwards . This kingfisher is essentially resident within 8° of the equator, but northern and southern populations are migratory, moving into the equatorial zone in the dry season.
It is a common species of a variety of wooded habitats with some trees, especially Acacias, including around human habitation. Although it is a "kingfisher", it prefers drier habitats in more traditional woodland and can be far from water. It is often solitary but can occur in small groups.

The Woodland Kingfisher is aggressively territorial, attacking intruders including humans. It has a striking display in which the wings are spread to show the white linings.
The nest is a tree hole excavated by a woodpecker or barbet. A single clutch of three round white eggs is typical.

It hunts from an exposed perch, often on a dead branch of a tree, or perches quietly in semi-shade while seeking food.

The call of this noisy kingfisher is a loud trill sounding like a nail run down the teeth of a comb.

Very good shot of this beauty bird. Superb POV, good details and nice and BG.
Best wishes,

Well Carl let me be honest, I am jealous, and let me tell you, not a teeny weeny little bit. This is a gorgeous image of gorgeous bird. I really love Kingfishers and my 1st image here on Trek Nature was also one of a Kingfisher but the colours on this Woodland Kingfisher is just so beautiful. I cannot let this image pass without adding it to my theme "Anna's Favourite" as well as "A Painters Dream". I think any artist will have time of their life painting a colourful bird like you have here. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Hi Carl
Well I cannot write any critique here because it is just great
I love the compo with the nice bg
The exposure on the bird and the bg is perfect which is far from easy under these conditions (backlight and fortunately closed canopy and no sky)
The catchlight in the eye is lovely
But above all the colors of the plumage are stunning and still very natural
The DOF is with f:/4 just deep enough to have the whole head perfectly sharp, the slightly OOF body is not disturbing at all, the color makes it all
As to the sharpenig, it's close to perfect (perfection does not exist) it's pin sharp around the eye without artefacts and looking very natural
This is a GREAT picture

Ciao Carl, wonderful kingfisher with fantastic colors, splendid sharpness and fine details, very well done my friend, ciao Silvio

Hello Carl,
such a marvellous shot. The beauty of this kingfisher is well shown in excellent sharpness, and wonderful colors. Congratulations for such a stunning image. The feathers are really outstanding in details and shines. The red beak is so pretty.
Excellent job, how I like this image is so immense.

Hi Carl,
this is wonderful to start with such a nice capture of kingfisher. Details are good with soft BG. Brilliant colors.

Hello Carl,
What a magnificent image! The field of focus is just where it is required and the colours, both FG and BG, are magnificent. The composition is perfect too. They say we should critique and not just praise or make a comment but I really cannot find anything to suggest except that a tiny highlight in the eye, more than the existing, would add a little extra. Very well done indeed. Best wishes.

Hi Carl,

The piece of the tree is helping to frame the bird. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the Woodland Kingfisher. The late morning light and the light of the flash are making the colors to stand out. Have a nice day.
