Large Tortoiseshell, Nymphalis polychloros

Swedish name: Körsbärsfuks.

After taking a picture of Small Tortoiseshell butterflies (Aglais urticae) feasting on Sallow Catkins last year, I was determined to do the same of the much rarer polychloros. We found a Sallow Tree (Salix caprea) in flower in the area on Öland where it is known to occur. There were 4 polychloros feeding but only one urticae.

This species of butterfly that over winters as an adult is very rare on the Swedish mainland but more easily found on the island of Öland.

It is rare in N. Europe and now extinct in the UK, but more common in the C. and S..

In flight it looks much paler and larger than the commoner Small Tortoiseshell butterfly and the upper surface of the wings lack the central large dark area.

It over winters in sheltered places to emerge in the warmth of spring. After pairing the female lays her eggs on various species of tree, especially Elm and fruit trees. The caterpillars are often parasitized, which can drastically reduce numbers.

Adults emerge in July and soon go into aestivation to spend the winter.

This was taken with my long lens hand-held at a distance of about 2.5 meters (8 ft).
After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened using the unsharp mask mode and converted from RAW to JPEG.

Hej Ivan,

Thanks for this lovely photograph of the Large Tortoiseshell on its host tree. Pix against a blue sky are often lovely, as here, but could be overdone at times.

Your notes are also interesting and informative. Thanks for taking the time!

Lovely spring-time atmosphere added by the flowering of the Salix.

All the best,

Ishi

Hello Ivan.

Nicely captured rare specimen during the colder season against the contrasting blue sky. The downward perch in full spreading wings allowed the whole butterfly focused on the same plane. Beautiful work and thanks for sharing.
Regards.

Hi Ivan.
Simply amazing spring subject. Blossoming buds on the tree branches and charming butterfly create a touching composition. Colours are also wonderful and very pleasant for eye. I am glad that spring already come to your places. TFS and best wishes.
Alexei.

Hi, Ivan
Once again, I envy your opportunity to take this photograph. Unfortunately, polychloros has joined the list of butterflies that have become extinct in the UK, and even its little sister urticae has become much scarcer in recent years. This specimen has come through hibernation in good condition, and the whole photograph is a delight. Thanks for sharing this.
Nigel.

Hallo Ivan,
a very beautiful capture, excellent point of view showing perfectly the markings of this marvellous species, splendid natural colours, very pleasant composition, very well done
TFS
Best regards
Maurizio
