Long-tailed Tit, Aegithalos caudatus
Swedish name: Stjärtmes

We were busy photographing spring flowers when we heard the familiar chirruping noise that this species makes. I didn't have time to put up the speed and I took just two shots before it flew away to build its nest. The sharpness could perhaps have been better if the shutterspeed were higher.

Of its 15cm, the tail is about 8cm long. It is a constantly active little bird and not easy to photograph. Here it was gathering nesting material together with its partner. The nest is an intricate well camouflaged construction consisting of feathers, moss and lichens held together by spider’s egg cocoons. It is like a sack with a small hole near the top. It is placed in a bush or crevice in a tree. As many as 10 eggs may be laid.

Its high breeding rate is counteracted by high predation, especially of the nestlings.

It is widespread in all of Europe except the far North and occurs in several races. The Scandinavian race, caudatus has a completely white head.

This was taken at a distance of about 5 meters (16ft) with the camera hand held
After moderate cropping and size reduction this image was slightly sharpened and converted from RAW.

Hello Ivan,

An Amazing shot of this Long-tailed Tit, with great clarity and sharpness with the situation at your hand. Great colors and exposure. Great shot indeed and great luck. I love the composition and notes. TFS. Happy Easter my friend.

Hello Ivan,
You were wonderfully well rewarded for your good observation and quick reaction. Clearly "unposed" activity with the twig at the lower right corner deliberately, I am sure, left by you in the photo adding to the natural appearance of this very pleasing image. Congratulations also on the minimal amount of PP required...I think cropping and sharpening with size reduction does not really amount to PP. That, in my opinion, is what we should strive for. Best wishes.

Hello Ivan,
nice capture of this bird building a nest. I like the good sharpness and the nicely blurred background. I also like the natural colours and your good timing.
Best wishes and Happy Easter,

Bonjour Ivan,

Excellent image of this cute bird, interesting to note that its body is in line with the perch, the colors are very earthly all of them..tfs.

Super close-up of this powerful bird. Very sharp and fine natural colours.
Best regards Siggi

hello Ivan,
great shot, the beak is so small, I wonder how many feathers could lead!
Happy Easter!

very good moment, with this wonderful creature, excellent performance!

Hello Ivan.
To get a stunning image of a little bird with just two shots is quite a feat. The nesting material adds interest and that linear perch along the focus plane is brilliant. This is a well isolated image with nicely silenced background in the frame.
Thanks and have a wonderful weekend.

Hello Ivan,
exciting view of this bird. Excellent sharpness with lovely details. The catch is so well added to make a special composition.
Exciting work.

Hej Ivan,
a very nice picture of the restless and quick bird.
Not easy tp get a decent shot of them but you managed well.
Stjärtmesen is a great nest builder, almost impossible to find their nests.
Well done, mf.

Hi Ivan.
I have met and picture this small beauty only once. Unfortunately, I could not get any good picture. Yours is amazing. First of all it is a simple and charming diagonal subject, unusual scene (I mean a bird with few items in the beak), very good details and wonderful colours. My compliments and best regards.

Preciosa !
