[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a honey bee (Apis mellifera) which is evaluating a lavender flower. It turns around to choose the best flower on which to land and collect the nectar (which is a clear liquid consisting of nearly 80% water with complex sugars). The lavender in my parent's garden is a joy for bees and bumblebees, which come all day long on these flowers, especially in the summer, to collect the nectar. More details about bees are available on wikipedia.

It is difficult to capture this kind of shot because the bees are fast insects (a shutter speed of 1/500s is good to freeze the wings, but not less). What I like most in the picture is the fact that the bee is flying. The hour to take this shot is not perfect because the shadows are harsh at 4 pm. That is why I used a contrast mask in the post-processing.

I did the same post-processing as before except that I used the unsharp mask only once for capture sharpening. I hope that now the picture is correctly sharpened, but all comments will be welcomed. I removed some of the noise which is present in the original shot. I also added a framing to improve the contrast.

Welcome on TN Michael

Very good first post with great sharpness, very natural colours and plenty of details in both the bee and the flowers. I think you did a great job with the shutter on 1/500 - usual I do this with a shutter at 1/1000 and depending on how they move it is not always fast enough. Great post-process job too and also the note.

Hi Michael, welcome to TN.
Great "presence" for this shot - likely due to your post processing. The colors really pop. I agree with Mogens, 1/500 is borderline to freeze the wings.

HI Michael,
Great shot! I've beentring to photograph these guys this week but have been unable to get a shot this good. A hard job to catch them especially on the wing.
Great work.
:)

Welcome to TN.
You've done a good job here I think. Good focus on the bee and flower and I like the background which gives a 3D effect. Great composition. The speed may be a little slow for perfect sharpness, but its not a bad shot. Well done.
