[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The island of Madeira harbours only a few butterflies species, currently 16.
Among them is a species of the Sayrinae genus Hipparchia which is considered an endemic species of the small island:

- Hipparchia maderensis
- family: Nymphalidae
- subfamily: Satyrinae

Madeiran Grayling

Interestingly, the poor butterfly faunas of the Azores include even 3 Hipparchia endemics (H. azorina, H. occidentalis and H. miguelenesis) and the Canary Islands also one (H. wyssii) which, however, belongs to another subgenus in relation to the other above mentioned species.

Location
Madeira, close to the summit of Pico Ruivo at about 1800 m.

Hello Peter,
Interesting to see this species of Grayling endemic to Madeira! A fine sharp capture showing markings and colours very well. Looks like the hidden wing has been injured? Interesting note worth remembering too!
TFS and best regards, Ulla

Lieber Peter,
Habe eine Vorliebe für Hipparchia-Schmetterlinge. Sie sind irgendwie so geheimnisvoll. Eine schöne Darstellung, klar und einfach. Hübsch das kleine Löwenzahnschirmchen vor dem Schmetterling. Interssanter Begleittext auch. Herzlichen Dank und liebe Grüsse
Anne
