Catocala elocata (Esper, 1787)
French Red Underwing

Catocala elocata is a large moth of the family Noctuidae (According to some authors Superfamily Noctuoidea Family Erebidae). It has a wingspan of 80-85 mm and a flight period from June to September. It is found in Europe, North Africa and West Asia.

In Cyprus Catocala elocata is a rare species found manly in the valleys of Troodos Mountains. The larvae feed on Salix alba and Populus nigra.

Bonjour Christodoulos,
Perfect camouflage, so perfect that we could easily miss the picture! An interesting species which we see only rarely. That it is the red form is given by the little intervalle between both wings. Last year I had one of this species in my kitchen.. As usual excellent shot.
