after a Halloween Pennant (Celithemis eponina) female, next comes a male. and once again, am happy to keep one male and one female of the same species side by side in my gallery :)

in my previous post, i was talking about luck. yes, for this particular species, i didn't have to wait much. got the male and the female almost at the same time and in the same place: my treasure island :)

as usual, at that time i had no idea of its ID. i was very surprised and happy to discover that the two new dragonflies i found on that day were the male & female of the same species.

as i had said before..

Halloween Pennant (Celithemis eponina) is a North American dragonfly (central & east) which belongs to the family 'Libellulidae'. Libellulidae is the family of Skimmers and is the LARGEST dragonfly family in the world.

the average size of this dragonfly is 30-42 mm.

Halloween Pennant basically lives around ponds, marshes and lakes and often perched on weedy stems.

the Halloween Pennant has been described as looking very similar to a butterfly. its wings are orange-yellow in color, though its markings are dark brown, not black as is commonly believed. the entirely orange-yellow wings with dark brown bands are what has given it its 'Halloween' common name.

females normally lay their eggs in the morning, in open water, whilst their mate is still attached to them by the head. this method is known as exophytic egg laying. sexual activity normally occurs between 8 and 10:30 am, and males will normally wait for females to come to them around the edge of ponds, whilst perched on a weed.

I am VERY pleased to meet a young lady who studies physics...as I have over many years. The notions of science tend to color the eyes we see through, as in this example here..which is a close semblence to what you call perfection. I so enjoy a wider angle which I coined environmental shot many years ago...Fine job and nice meeting you.

This picture of the male is ways better than that of the female you posted yesterday, Ruby. A steadier hand and clever use of the ambient light are clearly in evidence here. I'm happy about your achievement in placing the male and the female of the same species side-by-side on your portfolio.
Keep going, plucky girl!

Hello Ruby,
How many pairs does this make for you now, I counted at least six. That is a real accomplishment in itself, since you have only been here for a short time.
I must say the female looks as colorful as the male. I really like the way the warm sunrays give the wings a soft reddish tint. She is definitely a beauty and well worth the effort you put forth to capture her image. Well done!!

Hello Ruby,

Another beautiful ode image & another species that does not venture up our way. Beautiful, slightly spiritish light to create a complimemtary bokeh for this aptly named dragonfly. Pov is perfect for the perched pose too. Well taken & very well engineered!
