A freshly emerged Question Mark butterfly, notice the bright, silver border and vivid orange - both characteristics of a recent emergence.

The Question Mark (Polygonia interrogationis) is a North American nymphalid butterfly. Our largest Polygonia (wingspan: 45 to 68 mm), it can be distinguished on the wing from the others by its size, its wing shape, and the long, violet-edged hindwing tails(partially missing on this specimen). They live in wooded areas and city parks, or generally in areas which feature trees and free spaces. The adult butterfly has a wingspan of 4.5–7.6 cm (1.8–3.0 in).[1][2] Its flight period is from May to September. "The silver mark on the underside of the hindwing is broken into two parts, a curved line and a dot, creating a ?-shaped mark that gives the species its common name.

The Question Mark occurs in eastern North America from Mexico north to St. John's, Newfoundland (one record), St-Félicien, Quebec, and Lukinto Lake, Ontario, and west through southern Manitoba to southeastern Saskatchewan. There is one record from the Blackfoot Hills near Lloydminster, Alberta.

Hello Derek,
Very interesting for us to see the special shape of your NA'Polygonia which is quite different from ours(Polygonia c-album). You caught it with perfect opened wings. Sharpness is a little bit just, composition and color-contrast are fine.
Kind regards
Anne
