[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
An Ethiopian Highland Hare. This is an endemic hare (i.e. found only in Ethiopia) and is restricted to high altitude alpine areas. This particular photo was taken on the Guassa Plateau in North Central Ethiopia. The 'Guassa' is one of, if not the final, remaining undisturbed patch of Afro-alpine grassland left in Ethiopia. This is due to a 400 year old local conservation initiative called the 'Quero' which restricts human grazing and grass harvesting in this area. Situated just atop the western rim of the Great Rift Valley, the cliffs here are not as spectacular as those seen in the Simien Mountains, but the flora and fauna is unmatched!
