Looks to me like your 300MM is doing just fine. Love it's curious stance and good eye contact that you managed to capture.
I have tried teleconvertors from time to time, but never seem to get the quality of focus that I had hoped for when using one. I admit I usually don't use a tripod, so maybe that alone would make a world of differance.

You're capturing well this Nuthatch by a good compositin/focus and very excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the cute Nuthatch with the back of blue gray, white belly and a short tail. You catch a good pose at which the bird has stopped to a sprig horizontally.
