Colaptes auratus cafer (Norther Flicker, or Red Shafted Flicker).

Taken from my kitchen window through glass pane. Distance about 15 meters.

Temperatures were near zero degrees Fahrenheit so this bird was resting with plumage fluffed up.

Hello Michael,
Outstanding photograph, excellent sharpness, outstanding composition, good background.

The extraordinary clarity of this shot taken through window glass made me curious about your camera settings, so I had a look at your exif data, Michael. I notice that at shutter speed 1/2000 and ISO rating 400, you have procured a noiseless image with very minute details on the bird. Just superb! I normally end up with an extremely noisy image at those settings.
The drooping eye of the bird with a catch-light in it is the finest part of this otherwise technically superior picture. It does convey the feeling that the bird is cold and sleepy.
Warm regards.

Hi Mike
He looks cold, all puffed out. Thats a good shot thru glass. I find glass flattens an image but
you have terrific detail and sharpness. The window was must have been in a good spot because
I really like you composition.
Thanks for sharing
Best regards

Hello Michael
Beautiful bird and beautiful photo with very good composition and nice soft lighting

Amazingly close shot Michael. Love the detail. Framed well with good colours. He looks more tired than cold. Nice to see one in such detail. TFS Trevor
