Shepherd's Fritillary (Boloria pales) is a butterfly of the Nymphalidae family. It is found from the Cantabrian Mountains and the Pyrenees through the Alps and Apennine Mountains east to the Balkan, Carpathian Mountains, the Caucasus and central Asia up to western China. The wingspan is 25-30 mm. Adults are on wing from June to August depending on the location. There is one generation per year. The larvae feed on various low growing plants, but prefer Viola species.


La pale è presente su tutto l'arco alpino, sporadica e localizzata. Farfalla a volo basso e rapido, predilige le praterie e i pascoli montani fino al piano alpino. Il maschio ha le ali di colore arancione con abbondanti chiazzature e striature nere distribuite in maniera caratteristica su tutto lo specchio alare e ampia sfumatura basale nerastra, maggiore nelle posteriori. La femmina è somigliante al maschio, ma in genere più grande, con una velatura chiara. La parte inferiore delle ali simile per entrambi i sessi, è di colore arancione con leggere macchiettature e striature nerastre caratteristiche e apice giallastro nelle anteriori; le posteriore sono giallo-arancioni con una leggera sfumatura rossastra, sparse aree bianche e serie di puntini submarginali. Carattere distintivo della specie è l'area submarginale compresa tra la prima nervatura cubitale e la terza mediana, gialal con sfumatura rossastra. Univoltina. Sverna come larva. Le uova sono deposte singolarmente sulle foglie della pianta nutrice: Viola calcarata. Le larve hanno vita solitaria e si impupano direttamente sui rami e sulle foglie della pianta nutrice.
