……catches the worm!

The Earthworm , Lumbricus terrestris
Swedish name: Daggmask, meaning ‘dew-worm’

Charles Darwin wrote a book about the earthworm, its population density and importance for recycling leaves and other organic matter into the soil to make humus.
It is found throughout world.

During the night and early morning it comes up to the surface of the ground to draw into its burrow dead leaves and other plant matter that it then feeds on. This process increases the humus in the soil as well as aerating it.

It is also an important source of food for both birds and mammals.

Fieldfare , Turdus pilaris
Swedish name: Björktrast

I saw this one in the local park fairly early in the morning.
Many birds have the ability to collect food that they wedge under the tongue while picking up the next item. This one has collected at least two earthworms.

The Fieldfare can easily be told from other thrushes by the grey head and the orange among the dense spotting on the breast. It makes loud clacking sounds especially in a flock. In contrast the song is a soft musical chattering.

Though some stay the winter, most over winter in Europe south of Sweden. They return in the spring to breed in woodlands of most parts of the country. The nest is built of grass in a forked branch and is lined with mud.

Fieldfares are fairly common in N. and C. Europe and have even spread to S. Greenland during the last century. They spend the winter in the whole of the UK and breed in Scotland.

After slight cropping and size reduction this was sharpened and adjusted for light levels.

Hej Ivan,
This is the life ..
Beautiful photo in good sharpness, nice natural colors and composition.
Best wishes,

Hello Sir ...Its really a great pic .. Nice compositions ....Love the sharpness of images ..I like This pic really ...

Literal graphic presentation of the famous proverb, Ivan.
The bird has a fairly good collection of worms in its beak and I'm amused to know that it was early in the morning when you shot it!
So an early photographer also catches the bird, ha, ha!
Wonderful capture that shows the features and colours of this bird very clearly and beautifully.

Hi Ivan,

This one has certainly got a good beak full.

A nice taken shot from a low angle and good dof, focus is spot giving nice clarity and colours. A nice even background and pov.

Thanks for sharing and have a nice weekend, regards Bill.

Hello Ivan.
Two subjects captured in excellent details, neighbor. The DoF is well kept in keeping the subjects in beautiful details. Interesting that earthworms come out at night and early morning only - a better reason for birds to get up early.
Thanks and have a wonderful weekend coming.

Hello Ivan,
fine capture of this bird with good sharpness and nice details like the worm. I also like the beautiful colours and the green surrounding. I would have cropped the purple spots at the upper edge of the picture.

Hello Ivan,
This is a new bird for me, but it reminds me so much of our American Robin. It's body features are very similar and it's colors are close to that of a very young Robin. I also see it feeds on earthworms in the same manner that the robin does.
A beautiful bird indeed and captured perfectly by your camera. Thank you so much for sharing this image with all of us.

Hola Ivan, que hermosa foto del Mirlo en sus labores cotidianas, es probable que tenga pollos en un nido???, excelente luz, color, detalles de la especie, entorno y composición...saludos.

Hi Ivan,

The early bird finds the gold, as a Hungarian proverb says. This fieldfare also managed to... like you, who shot a fantastic photo. Pleasant composition (probably I might crop a little tighter at the top, but a touch, really), impeccable sharpness, great color tones and nice shallow DoF to isolate the bird from the background. Bravo.

In Hungary this species is very rarely nesting, but a common migrant, sometimes overwintering.

Best regards, László
