Unknown mushroom

ecology and location

I have encountered this mushroom on an old stump of oil palm tree in decay. It was in DRC, in the equatorial part of the country.

Characteristic

As you can see, it is a medium size mushroom (cap of around 3 to 6 centimetres of diameter).

The cap is not very coloured, mainly white, grey and brown. We can observe scares in concentric disposition on the carpophorus.

The mushroom shown here lives on wood in decay. In reality, the decaying is partly due to the action of the mushrooms themselves. By their action, they extract the nutriments they needs from the decaying of the wood and they return to the soil the organic mater contributing to the increase of the humus and the fertility of the top soil.

The picture

The picture was taken in the morning under a good sunshine light. With a sensitivity equivalent to ISO-200 and an apperture of f/8, the speed was 1/640, with a focal legnth of 6 millimetres.

Post treatment

Recropping and resizing ; improvement of the gamma and the sharpness with Olympus studio.

Philippe,

Excellent POV (not the usual lateral or ventral). Tones are amazing with perfect focus. Captured well the texture of each mushroom. White balance is perfect. Well done.

Hi Philippe,
Your specimens remind me to the generas Panus and Lentinus, but of course more proper ID specification is impossible without microscopic analysation. Fabulous presentation of the surface textures, excellent use of flash. I think I should have removed the fruitbody on the bottom, beecause this way the composition seems a little unbalanced. Otherwise a fantastic job.
Best regards, László
