Hyphantria cunea (Drury, 1773)

Hyphantria cunea è un lepidottero defogliatore polifago, appartenente alla famiglia degli Arctidae. Segnalato in Europa per la prima volta negli anni Quaranta in Ungheria, la sua presenza in Italia risale ai primi anni Ottanta in Emilia.

Pur avendo una spiccata preferenza per acero (in particolare Acer negundo) e gelso, molto rare sono le piante arboree che sono state risparmiate dalla defogliazione negli anni Ottanta, periodo durante il quale l’arctide ha manifestato i maggior danni: tra queste si segnala la robinia.

È stata segnalata anche su alcune coltivazioni erbacee come il mais e la soia.

Gli adulti, farfalline bianche con piccole maculature nere sulle ali anteriori, compaiono da aprile ma è a maggio che la loro presenza raggiunge i picchi più elevati.

Ogni femmina è in grado di produrre anche un migliaio di uova deponendole preferibilmente sulla pagina inferiore delle foglie a gruppi di 50-100 unità.

Dalle uova dopo 15-20 giorni fuoriescono piccole larve che iniziano subito a costruire piccoli ma inconfondibili nidi sericei e biancastri raggruppando 2 o più foglie. All’interno di questi ricoveri le giovani larve si nutrono, in modo gregario, del mesofillo fogliare lasciando intatte le nervature principali. Le larve dopo le prime mute assumono un aspetto particolare per la presenza di lunghi peli bianchi e neri che ricoprono il corpo e vivono solitarie.
