[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The twelfth in the series FROM ICE TO FIRE - A TWO HUNDRED MILLION YEAR JOURNEY BETWEEN TWO DESERTS. To follow the whole journey one would have to start with Image 1.

From the same formation as the previous upload but different locality. Sedimentary strata are deposited in horizontal fashion, as seen in the upper part of the image here, but internally may show much variation. Directional sedimentary structures indicate the direction in which the transporting medium was flowing - water of a big river system in this case. Various types of cross bedding exist, notably tabular, or planar, cross bedding, trough cross bedding, micro cross lamination and herringbone structure.

At first sight the lower third of the image would appear to be tabular cross bedding indicating flow from left to right. Closer inspection, however, reveals that it is in fact the southern flank of a large trough of cross bedding with the flow from the viewer into the plane of the photograph. So ... better to observe and measure in plan rather than in section as seen here. This can be problematic underground with determining the continuation of a sedimentary ore body in a mine. One could be as much as ninety degrees, and lots of money, off course in one's prediction. Again, careful observation is the key.

Note: Tape measure, extended to one metre length, for scale. No post-processing other than size reduction for uploading and no sharpening. It is a remarkable little camera.

Hello Neels,
Looking at this picture, it reminds me of sandstone we find in our area which was used for medieval constructions.
Very fine and natural shot to illustrate your note.
Thanks a lot
Anne
