White Blesbok / Damaliscus dorcas phillipsi

As I mentioned in my previous posting, I could not post as often as I would have loved to do, during the last couple of months of 2013. Also, due to the fact that we've been away on holiday, I could not share my Christmas wishes with you as in all the previous years that I have been part of Trek Nature, but as the saying goes: "Rather late than never".

I would however like to share my New Years thoughts with you as per mouth of Peggy Toney Horton, and I quote: "Each New Year, we have before us is a brand new book containing 365 blank pages. Let us fill them with all the forgotten things from last year. The words we forgot to say, the love we forgot to show, and the charity we forgot to offer."

During a very short vacation over the Festive season, we were very fortunate to photograph a herd of White Blesbok between Harrismith and Memel on our way back home to Empangeni.

We did not expect these animals along the roadside and when we saw them we had to grab our cameras and photograph them just as quickly as we could. When we saw them, there was no time for adjusting or setting the cameras for the shoot. This image is therefore not a brilliant shot as it was point and shoot, before they ran away. This was pure luck that we encountered these beautiful bucks, and I was fortunate to have been able to capture them and share this image with you.

It seems as if this is only the 2nd photo of this species here on Trek Nature. I searched the website for images of a Blesbok and could only find the one Callie posted way back in 2004, but that was of a normal Blesbok. An image of a "White" Blesbok is definitely a first, and I must admit that I am quite chuffed about this fact.

All that has been said regarding the common Blesbok and the Bontebok, can be applied to the White Blesbok. A mutation in colour, the White Blesbok is not an albino, but rather merely a variation in colour. Its white colour and straw coloured horns set him apart from his common brothers. It exhibits the same territorial tendencies; challenging displays, threatening behaviour, and marking of the grass with his preorbital glands. The Blesbok is indigenous to South Africa. Source

What a lucky find and quick reaction, Anna! On December 30 ... The year 2013 took leave of you by giving you this beautiful vision of four dorcas Damaliscus phillipsi adults and three calves. Hi Anna Eksteen, We all have run into situation like that you took this picture. We are lucky if our cameras setting is at a proper exposure for the shot, if not, then luck has to come to help.

Thanks a lot for your kind wishes. Let's hope that 2014 will be a good year for everyone here. Interesting picture of a rarely shown species on TN. I like the way this family stares at the humans..Interesting to read that they are not albinos.

Hola Anna, que belleza de foto la se estos White Blesbok, especie que no conocía; excelente composición, color, manejo de la luz y entorno. Tengo una pregunta, al fondo se ve parte de un becerro con un color más obscuro que el resto de la manada, es normal esta coloración???...saludos.
