First day of the year was a successful bird photography day for me. Yesterday I watched three new bird at our area whom I did not found earlier. Today I would like to show you one of them. It is a Male Red Collared Dove (Streptopelia tranquebarica) I found this nice bird on the side of Mayurakshi canal at Santiniketan.

Hope you like this.

The Red Collared Dove (Streptopelia tranquebarica), also known as, the Red Turtle Dove, is a small pigeon which is a resident breeding bird in the tropics in the Indian subcontinent.
This dove is essentially a plains species, extending to Taiwan and the Philippines but uncommon on the Malaysian archipelago, avoiding rocky foothill and an oriential species. There is however a summer migration into the broader cultivated valleys of Afghania where it breeds. It is the commonest dove throughout Punjab. It is a summer migrant visitor to India, where it is more or less resident. They prefer better-wooded tracts such as canal or roadside tree plantations and avoid extensive desert regions. When they first arrive they are often in small flocks, but they soon split up and start pain formation and breeding.

Male has blue-grey head with black half-collar, pinkish maroon upper-parts and pink under parts. Compared with Eurasian collard, female has darker-buffish-grey underparts., darker fawn-brown upper-parts, grey under-wing coverts, white (rather than grey vent, ) and is smaller with shorter tail. juvenile lacks neck collar, and feather of upper-parts and breast are fringed with buff.

Hi Samiran
What a beautiful dove. With your information, i just jumped on to check the book -Birds of Indian Sub continent and went through the dove section. This picture is so beautiful that for an minute i had to understand the bird in the book n the bird here. There illustration makes me so confused. I am spellbound to see such birds in Shantineketan area.
