Black head, neck and back
Bright red orange hind collar and bar across scapulars
Narrow white supercilium
Female Olive grey upperparts
Yellowish-buff underparts
Streaky brown
Buff supercilium

Coniferous and broadleaf forests in high mountains.


The diet includes insects and caterpillars.

The female builds the nest from grass, hay, moss and roots in a natural or a tree cavity. The clutch of 2-3 eggs are incubated by the female. Both sexes care for the young.

Endemic to Taiwan.
