[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
The Bobtail lizard (Tiquila rugosa) is a familiar reptile in Australia. It is a large skink, up to 30cm long, well known for its defensive behaviour where it opens its mouth, hisses and display its blue tongue. It can inflict a painful bite but does not attack unless threatened. It is well camouflaged but encounters with large dogs and cars are usually fatal to this grumpy native inhabitant. It is often found in gardens, munching on anything from strawberries to snails and even dog food on occasion. Gives birth to only 1-3 live youngs and can live for many decades. |
