Neotinea lactea
Family : Orchidaceae

Neotinea lactea is robust plant 10-20cm very common wild orchid of cretan flora. It prefers dry to moist, slightly acid to calcareous soils in sunny or semi-shaded places, such as chalk grasslands, abandoned olive groves, open places in scrubland and open woodlands. At altitudes from sea level to 1,800 m

The flowers are small. The sepals are grown together at the base, dark green oval to lanceolate, with a long pointed tip, white or light pink, the veins. The petals are shorter and narrower, with purple veins. Sepals and petals form an egg-shaped helmet, with the three points touch each other in the middle and then bow out.

The lip is up to 11 mm long, flat, drooping, three-lobed, the side lobes and spread to the curved rear and Sessile top, midlobe wider, incised or slightly two-lobed. The lip is milky white, densely covered with dark pink or purple dots or dashes.

The flowering period is Febr to mid April in Crete.

Hello Nikos,
beautiful and rare orchid, thanks for sharing,regards..

Hello Nikos,
Color, color and more beautiful color is how I would describe this image. A wonderful shot of this attractive species of orchid. I love their unique features and vivid red wine, white and greenish hues. The framing is great and the BG is gorgeous. The focus to me seems just a tad soft, but still a pleasure to view.
