Hi Anne,
This is Science in Nature. You correctly pointed out that these are dendrites. It is also my research topic. You can see here:

Hi Anne!
An interesting post of these Dendrites formed on the surface of a Sandstone. Very good sharpness and details.Darker color is because of oxides of Manganese or Iron. The rock in your shot is relatively fresh in geologic sense. In older rocks that has undergone erosion and give a somewhat polished look , these patterns can be extremely beautiful and give a real fossilized look (on polished sandstones and limestones). Rocks with very smaller dendritic patterns are cut and later transformed into beautiful earrings, rings and pendants. My wife does have a small collection of these. Thanks for sharing this fine presentation,
Best Regards,
AKBAR

Anne,
I think this is a FIRST for TN.
These are, indeed, dendrites.
I've seen these in Goa, India.
A lovely presentation.
Great notes too.
Fond and warm regards,
Mario

Hello Anne,
Like you, at first glance I thought this was a fossil of some fern plant. This is something new to me and quite educational. Isn't it interesting how it fans out similar to the way ice crystals do on a window, creating a picturesque image. I wonder if the red markings on the upper left hand corner are the same thing? Well done!!

Hello Anne, A good example of dendrites and congratulations with a first on TN. Dendrites are often found in our area where they form on parting surfaces of along bedding planes in sandstone. Someone once told me that he had found a fossil of a fern and produced a specimen that he had taken. About three months later he told me the same again and added "I cannot remember who it was that said it was not a fossil but that is stupid. Anyone can see that it is a fossil of a plant." So they can be very convincing :) Best wishes.
