From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lucanus cervus is the best-known species of stag beetle in the West (family Lucanidae), and is sometimes referred to simply as the stag beetle. In the UK it is associated with urban gardens, but is more commonly found in forests in the rest of Europe. Forest management, in eliminating old trees and dead wood, eliminates at the same time the habitat and food of this species. Once quite common, the population of the Lucanus cervus, along with that of other species of beetles which feed on dead wood, is in decline, and is now listed as a globally threatened/declining species.

Hi Jiri,a very lucky meeting with this big beetle that i never seen in my country, magnificent capture with great detail everywhere despite the difficult light and location.Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

This is quite a MONSTER looking creature.
It is soooooo well focused that I can see its left eye very clearly despite the "blackness" of its eye and main body.
It also has 2 sort of light bulbs at the end of each antenna. Are these two "auxiliary" eyes?
Loved your notes.
Our country is EXTREMELY COLD; hence, if we see bugs and butterflies etc: that's only in the Summer months.
Despite the COLD Canada is a PARADISE. There is PEACE & wealth here all the time. GREAT LAND.
Mario with best wishes.

Wonderful capture of this rather large Stag Beetle, Jiri.
The angle of exposure gives a fair view of the features ob this black coloured insect.
Thanks and regards.

Bravo! Good quality shot.

Ciao Jiri. Interesting hight POV. Excellente details beautiful light against the blurred BG.
