Anatolian Tawny Rockbrown / Buff Asian Grayling

Turkish Name : Osmanlı Yalancı Cadı Kelebeği.

Distribution in Turkey: Central Anatolia, South, East and Northeast Anatolia.

Distribution in the world: Turkey, Armenia and Iran.


Living Area: It inhabits rock slides, climbing areas open dry steppe stony slopes, sometimes with thickets of dry-loving shrubs from 900 to 2500 meters.

Flight time: One generation. July to August.

Food Plants of the caterpillar: Caterpillars, Annual bluegrass (Poa annua) are fed with.

Description-Notes: Type locality: Turkey. This is a hot dry habitat specialist. Nominate subspecies found in the northeast has deep orange forewing and heavily mottled hindwing that looks much darker ocher-brown than its relatives. Irregular median line, gray wavy postmedian band and dark wavy submarginal line may be all conspicuous. Subspecies Pseudochazara birgit (Mainly south-central Anatolia) and Pseudochazara schakuhensis (Turkey- Van and Hakkari) have paler orange forewing and lightly mottled hindwing with less obvious markings. In all populations, hindwing eyespot and whitish fringes are lightly checkered.

Wingspan: 50-54 mm long.

Origin of the name: Mamurra (Latin, historical) - Mamurra Roman horseman nazhivshy under Caesar vast fortune, but it quickly squandered (Nekrutenko, 1990).

Hello Seyfi,
Your butterfly looks very peaceful as it sips nectar from the thistle bloom. You managed to capture it in fine detail while keeping the exposure just right. The intricate markings and patterns in it's wings are certainly a thing of beauty. I really like the clean BG and attractive composition. Well done!!
