When I got home from work this evening I noticed a small group of Juncos in the back yard. These feisty little birds are always on the ground searching for seeds.

I hurriedly grabbed my camera hoping to capture a few images before the light completely faded into darkness. This curious little male came hopping towards me in the newly fallen snow, giving me just enough time for a quick shot.

I look forward every winter for these beautiful birds to visit our backyard. Juncos seem to prefer feeding from the ground, picking up what other birds spill from the feeders.

I love their pretty pink beaks and dark eyes. The males have a snow white belly and underside of tail with a rich dark slate gray head and chest. The females looks similar but have shades of brown mixed into their plumage.

Very cute bird on snow, looking back at you without fear, Ron.
Lovely capture despite restricted light conditions.
Thanks.

Hello Ron -"Juncos"! New species to me. Very well captured this little curious one. Good details on 'alula', 'breast', as well as 'forehead', '"ores' and 'Chin'. Nice light on eye to. Thanks for sharing. Regards and have a nice WE - Srikumar

Hello Ron

With my DSLR (that I have since boxing day of Christmas 2011)
I did not have the chance yet to take in photo the Dark eyed Junco,
with my bridge and compact cameras I have done and never could
obtain great details of its dark coloured plumage as you photo here,
here I think you Flash helped to obtain that great exposure and details,
the little catch-light render always the photo more beautiful, TFS

Excellent job capturing the detail and color of this small, dark species. You know its mid-winter in our area when the juncos are back!
