Hello Robert,
A nice capture of this beautiful Male Cardinal on a snowy day, but just a tad soft on focus. I have the exact same lens and found out with an f/2.8 aperture setting I get a lot of soft focused images when photographing birds in thick brush and trees.
You don't get much DOF with this aperture setting and from what I can see, the focus was very sharp on the branch just left of the bird. Unless I have a completely unobstructed view of a bird, in branches like this I normally try using at least an f/5 aperture setting with this particular lens.
