Caucasian Fritillary

Turkish Name: Kafkas Menekşe Kelebeği.

Distribution in Turkey: Eastern Black Sea, Eastern Anatolia, high mountain slopes.

Distribution in the world: Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and South Russia.

Living Area: Alpine and subalpine wet mountain meadows up to 2500 meters.

Flight time: One generation flying in Mid-July to Mid-August.

Food Plants of the caterpillar: Caterpillars feed on alpine violets: Shallow violet (Viola minuta), Caucasian violet (V. caucasica), mountain violet (V. oreades).

Description-Notes: Typical locality, Georgia. Local and rare. One of the smallest fritillaries-(Boloria) in Turkey. Colors and patterns of the hindwing the other "types of Boloria as" very beautiful. Another small fritillary with orange-red upper sides and a row triangular marginal spots on both wings-but the only one in its range. Note the extensive dark basal area on hindwing. Orange, red and yellow hindwing markings are complex; but there is always a rusty basal band with a small light spot in the middle and white marginal spots. Males are more brightly colored .

Wingspan: 32-36 mm long.

Origin of the name: Caucasica (Latin, toponymic) - Caucasian.
