Amasian Satyr

Turkish Name: Beyaz Damarlı Piri Reis Kelebeği

Distribution in Turkey: Turkey is anywhere.

Distribution in the world: Asia Minor to the Middle East-Turkey, Transcaucasia-Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan.

Living Area: Stony steppe-clad slopes up to 1000 to 2000 meters of altitude.

Flight time: July-August.

Food Plants of the caterpillar: Caterpillars, Poaceae (grass) type plants fed.

Description-Notes: A large butterfly. Type Localite, "Amasia" [Amasya, Turkey]. Male above is lighter brown than all other satyrs; forewing has two eyespots. Female is like Anatolian Satyr, but is much smaller, with less strongly serrated hindwing outer margin. Below, with white veins and overall pattern resembles Caspian Satyr, but forewing contains two eyespots (one in Caspian Satyr) and has mottled gray outer margin (mottled orange in Caspian Satyr). Also both submarginal and median gray bands on hindwing are relatively more conspicuous.

Wingspan: 58-68 mm long.

Origin of the name: Amasinus (toponymic) - Amasya - the area in Turkey.

Hello Seyfi,
A nice presentation of this beautifully marked butterfly. I'm sure the earth toned colors help to keep it hidden from predators when perched on a tree. Tac sharp focus allowing us to view it's unique markings in fine detail. Excellent exposure and very good DOF. I like the blurred BG.
