If not for the white part in the head, I'd say this is a campo flicker. In Portuguese, pica-pau-do-campo (Colaptes campestris). The point is the campo flicker doesn't seem to have this red spot on the head.

Below, some note about woodpeckers.

The Woodpeckers are a large family of similarly designed birds found in forested areas around the globe. The have specially evolved to deal with chiseling wood, including "shock-absorber" head musculature, extremely long tongues, and stiff tail feathers helping them perch upright on trees. Woodpeckers are often a "core species" of the woodland avifauna [except in two major areas that don't have any woodpeckers: Australasia and Madagascar].

Woodpeckers come in a great variety of shapes and colors. One group are the flickers which specialize in feeding on the ground, often focussing on ants. The Campo Flicker (above) of southern South America is such a species and a very striking bird to boot. Yet even it has the stiffly pointed specialized tail feathers that held woodpeckers perch vertically on tree trunks.

Excellent bird Livio. Woodpeckers are rather hard to capture. Great looking red cap and pose. He was busy with his own business I think ;-)

Nice capture Livio. Very nicely composed and good colors. Details are sharp but unfortunately I can see a slight halo around the bird. TFS!
