Superfamily: Papilionoidea

Family: Nymphalidae

Genus: Issoria

Species: I. lathonia

The Queen of Spain Fritillary (Issoria lathonia) is a butterfly of the Nymphalidae family. It is common in southern Europe, migrating as far north as south Scandinavia every summer. It is a very rare visitor to the British Isles. Heat-dependent, this species is found breeding on the hottest places of the foodplants of the larvae (prefers Viola tricolor and Viola arvensis). The adult is a strong flyer, and may be found anywhere but forests.
The eggs of this species are laid on the Wild Pansy ( Viola tricolor).

Hi Luciano,

A very beautiful butterfly taken from a great viewpoint showing the undersides of both wings. How I wish we could get beauties like this in the UK.
Great focus and dof, nice composition on the contrasting flower and neutral background.

Thanks for sharing,
