[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hi Trekkers,

Probably this shot has more educational value than aesthetic, but I'd like to post this rarely seen species, as the motto of the site is "learning from nature through photography". So please regard Xylobolus frustulatus (Pers.) P. Karst., commonly known as the Ceramic parchment, the 1st time on TrekNature.

Living in the Quercus zone in temperate and subtropical areas, as the main host of the fungus are oaks (Quercus sp.). In Hungary, where this photo was taken, was considered as an extremely rare species, as it wasn't publicly recorded between 1953 and 2010, although Bánhegyi et al. in their identification book "Macrofungi of Hungary except for the cap fungi" (1953) mentioned it as "not rare". In the past few years Hungarian mycologists collected and recorded this species a lot of times, so as far as distribution goes, I agree with Bánhegyi et al. - the species was rather overlooked in the past, although it's relatively easy to identify even without microscope. My collected specimens are in my herbarium and in the Museum of Natural Sciences (Budapest, Hungary). You can see more of my and my colleagues' photos about this species by clicking here.

Photo: taken from the "dormouse's PoV", lying on the ground; closed to the city of Miskolc, in the Bükk National Park, just a few days before I moved to Ireland, in manual exposure mode. PP: moderate cropping, increasing highlights on the wood/fungi and decreasing shadows on the background. Selective sharpening and noise reduction with the Neat Image module after re-sizing.

Thanks for looking and reading.
