[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Pallid Scops Owl (Otus brucei-TR:Çizgili İshakkuşu), also known as Striated Scops Owl or Bruce's Scops Owl, is a species of scops owl (or screech owl in US) belonging to the family Strigidae.
There are 4 recognized subspecies. The nominate brucei breeds from Aral Sea to Kyrgystan and Tajikistan. O. b. exiguus breeds in Israel and S Iraq to W Pakistan and NE Arabia. O. b. obsoletus, pictured here, breeds from SE Turkey and N Syria to Uzbekistan and N Afghanistan. Finally, O. b. semenowi has a range from S Tajikistan to W China, N Pakistan and E Afghanistan.
It is mainly a summer visitor (some populations around Red Sea are only partially migratory), and winters in Israel and Tajikistan to Pakistan & W India.
It is seperated from Eurasian Scops Owl (O. scops) by it's paler colours, paler face disk, generally shorter wings, lightly streaked crown with no white spots, mainly streaked underparts (barely barred), buffish "braces" on scapulars, lack of rufous in plumage and voice.
It feeds with insects, such as beetles, locusts, moths or mole-crickets, spiders, small mammals (rodents, bats) and small birds (especially passerines) as well as lizards.
Best place to see this species in the world in Gulhane Tea Garden in Birecik, where several pairs of birds breed each year. This photo was taken there in fading light.

We are neighbours today, Kuzey.
Wonderful picture of a species of Owl I'm seeing for the first time. Great sharpness and colours.
The catch-light in its sleepy eye looks good.
Thanks.

Thanks for the capture of the Otus brucei. The evening light is always a plus in terms of the warmth of the composition. Well balanced spaces occupied by the subject and the rest of the environment (the balance in your compositions, and is your trademark, Kuzey). Thanks to your picture we see how the plumage is perfect to simulate the bark of a tree (this feature in all scops owl) camouflage. Congratulations on another very neat job. I share with you the fact of not being a professional photographer who can spend hours camouflaged and waiting; on the contrary I am a worker who performs his duties in a country suburb type; surrounded by a natural environment that includes wildlife. In my walks to arrive or leave from there take and try to get a good shot; to step !!! hahaha :)
