Sympetrum fonscolombii (Selys, 1840)
Odonata: Libellulidae
Common names: Red-veined Darter, Nomad

This is my first effort with the new TAMRON 90mm. I face some difficulties at first steps and I hope to become familiar with this macro lens by the time and the new camera as well. It looks very good.

Sympetrum fonscolombii is a very common drangonfly of cretan fauna. This in picture is a female found in Heraklion on an uncultivated land early in the morning. . The abdomen of males is redish or it has a characteric red line. It was flying all around the dry plants.

It occurs in much of central and southern Europe including most Mediterranean islands, in Africa, the Middle East and south-western Asia including India, Sri lanka, and Mongolia. In Europe it is resident in the south of its range but in some years it migrates northward and has been found as far north as Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Poland and northern England either in Scotland. It is likely that climate change will promote a further northwards expansion in the future. It is the only libellulid to be found in the Azores and it is also found on the Canary islands and Madeira.

Its main flight period is May to October and it is scarce during the winter months although it can be seen throughout the year in southern areas of its range and in the Mediterranean. Males are known for being aggressive and will perch on something within their territory while watching for intruders.
This species is found over many still water sources, but it is a migrating species, so it can be seen in areas with no water and over oceans.
It is found in all sorts of still water but being a migrant it is often found away from water. It has been seen flying over the sea.

Hello Nikos,

Nice to see your new Tamron 90mm lens and I think you like it now. I can see your Photograph quality has changed totally. Excellent work.....Proper instruments; like DSLR and True macro lens help a lot to capture good photograph. Very nice BG as well as sharpness. I like such OOF BG in such insect photography. Busy BG doesn't look good. Very good work....
Thanks for sharing your work,

Hello Nikos,
this is a excellent Picture. Great colours, sharpness excellent, a very nice composite. Well done.Regards Sigi

Focus on the abdomen, thorax and head of the dragonfly is sharp, Nikos. It has gone somewhat soft on the wingtips.
Still, it's a wonderful image.
