Tyrannus savanna (Linnaeus, 1758): tesourinha; fork-tailed flycatcher

The tesourinhas are birds that they are characterized by executing numerous aerobatics, showing the forked tail opening up as if they were the sheets of a scissors; this fact created the popular name. The nestlings, until a certain age, accompany the parents and they are easily distinguished for they possess the much smaller tail than the one of the adults. Of their 4 subspecieses, just T. s. savanna is migratory and he/she moves for the north of Brazil; it is present in the Brazilian southeast between September and February.

Feeding: insects captured during the flight, or when landed in trees.

Nidificação: the nest is made with dry branches, in bowl form, locating the about 4 m of the soil. The eggs, 4 or 5, they are white-yellowish with brown stains, brown-grown dark and gray, forming a wide crown in an of the poles. They measure about 21 x 16 mm and they are incubated by the couple.

Habitat: fields and savannahs.

Such: 36,5 cm
