From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Trithemis annulata, known commonly as the violet dropwing, violet-marked darter, purple-blushed darter or plum-coloured dropwing, is a species of dragonfly in the family Libellulidae. It is found in most of Africa, in the Middle East, in the Arabian Peninsula and southern Europe. These insects are called dropwings because of their habit of immediately lowering their wings after landing on a perch. Males of this species are violet-red with red veins in the wings while females are yellow and brown. Both sexes have red eyes.

Hi Jiri,
Beautiful composition with placing the dragonfly off-centered, really pleasant to look at. The red of the insect is perfectly saturated, and makes an awesome color contrast with the rather uninteresting background. Nice shallow DoF as well, while all parts of the dragonfly are tack sharp. Excellent image, hats off!
Best regards from Ireland, László

Hello Jiri,
Awesome shot of this gorgeous bright red colored dragonfly. The entire specimen is shown in super sharp focus. Love those beautiful wings in their typical drop wing pose. The composition is very eye appealing and the exposure is simply perfect. Love it!! Not quite sure why it was named the (Violet) Dropwing?
