Common Darter

It's mostley a lowland species found in small shallow pools and sheltered lakes. Rapidly colonises newly created sites. Can tolerate brackish water but avoids heavily shaded, densely vegetated and highly eutrophic sites.

His Flight period is from mid May to November according to locality.

Adult habitat and habits: a highly mobile species. At breeding sites males occupy perches on ground or on low perch and aggressively chase rival males. Unattached females are grasped and is taken to perch for copulation.

Oviposition site and behaviour: oviposition occurs with pair in tandem. Male controls behaviour and site selection when in tandem. Male will hover and drop causing female abdomen to touch water surface. Females will also oviposit alone in flight.

The larvae stay amongst vegetation. Larval development is completed in one year.

Range: southern and central Europe to central Scandinavia, northern Africa, across Asia to Japan. Absent from northern Scandinavia. Recorded throughout Ireland including many offshore islands.

yes this is one of the last tandems of this specie this year. They will pair, the lady lay her eggs. And it will be the end of those two. They have done there job. Life can be beautiful. I hope you like the shot I made today.
gr. Jaap

A great note and a very interesting photo. At first it might seem a bit cluttered, but you captured it as you saw it and you did an excellent job of it.

Very well done Jaap. The note is thought-provoking and inspiring!

Hi Jaap, very good tandem.
This must be the last tandem for the season, our d-flies gone since about a month.
Well composed, good details and nice warm colours.
Great work, my friend

I'm speechless. I used to watch this scene every summer as a child. I saw thousands of different types of dragonfly court and mate. (Once a dragonfly actually sat on my finger and laid her eggs; I still can't believe it could happen, I watched the whole process and helped the distraught lady onto a reed and dropped the eggs into the water, hoping it's the right thing.) The colors and the textures are fantastic. Goes to favs.

Well-composed shot but the BG is a bit distracting especially as it is more in focus then the left dragon. With this POV, anything else and still getting most of the animals in focus is difficult, so you managed well. Suggest tilting the camera slightly to get the plane of DOF mostly parallel to both bodies (the two may not be in line enough, so it may be impossible).

Great shot Jaap,
Good sharp and clear detail. The colours are nice and the exposure is spot on. Good framing.
Great shot. Thanks for posting, have a great week.

This is very sharp Jaap. It shows the details very well. There are some hot spots but they are not distracting. Very well done, mf.

Goedenmorgen Jaap,
Zeer mooi gedaan Jaap, mijn complimenten.
Verder een nieuwe prettige week.

Hi Jaap,

Hello Jaap!
Very nice macro.Vivid colors,POV,lighting, sharpness, details, framing and composition are wonderful.TFS...:-)

Hi Jaap:
I do like this shot very much. Well composed, with good detail and colour, and your note is very helpful to explain the scenario! It's a very good macro! Their wings are amazing. They look like they would just blow apart if they tried to use them.
Today I move back to my homeland, Canada. After 11 years away, it will be great to be home!
All the best!

Unusual shot Jaap with that leafy background but the details are very nice indeed. Well done.

Fantastic shot Jaap!

I have yet to see a pair mating, but will look even harder next year ;-)

Very sharp details, colors and lighting.

Congratulations on a great composition, and thank you.

Jaap, this is a great, rather funny and... lovely moment.

All of us would like to shoot one of this.

Great sharpness, vivid colors.

Jaap, I'm a little jelous, but thank you very much for this amazing shot. A few weeks ago I saw my first dragonfly so close and I were proud. Than I saw more of these wonderful flies and it was such a great wish to see such a tandem with my own eyes, but I haven't found a couple in love, only a couple of damselflies.
But next year - keep fingers cross - so thanks for this marvelous shot, what a wonderful world! Greetings
Sabine - wishnugaruda

Sharp details. Great DOF, color and detail Jaap. Interesting action captured my friend. Thank You.
