Mule Deer Stotting

Stotting is an action done by, not just Mule Deer but Pronghorn, Gazelles, Springbok and sheep. It's thought that by stotting it's a signal to predators that they are not worth pursuing.

There are several possible explanations to why animals stott. A few examples are an anti-ambush behaviour, alarm signal, a signal that the animal is healthy and fit and just playing around.

Hello Janice,
Not only a lovely image of this female mule deer, but a learning experience as well. I have never heard the term stotting before, although I knew about this particular style of running or bounding away by mule deer. Captured nicely by your lens in this action shot and giving us a great look at this beautiful animal.

Hello Janice,
A wonderful photo of a interesting and lovely specie of deer. Perfect catch despite the deer is running.....A well done job with high quality.

Hello Janice,
Great timing! Excellent sharp detailed and beautiful camouflaged colors. Nice DOF too.

Hello Janice,
Beautiful photograph of this joyous Deer in its natural habitat. Nicely captured. I like such brown grassland; rather than greenery sometimes. Like the way you framed it, but I would like to crop upper portion sky and little bit land out (use your thumb and cover upper part and watch) and I think it would be more attractive when concentration will go just on Deer and same color surrounding area. But your photograph is showing its perfect natural habitat as well as its roaming area.
Thanks for sharing with useful NOTE,

Hello Janice

Great action shot, fine lateral POV, beautiful light and
color tones, great focus, sharpness, and details, TFS
