[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
When going out with the dog this morning it occured to me again: Suddenly seeing something very pretty - and no proper camera at hand. A freshly hatched swallowtail was sitting close to the path spreading its wings towards the warming sun.

Iphiclides podalirius (Linnaeus, 1758)

"Sailing Swallowtail" - because of its seemingly effortless gliding flight, also known as the "Scarce Swallowtail". Wingspan: 60 - 90mm.

That rather conspicuous species of butterflies seems to be protected against predators by effective false-head mimicry with bold eye-spots and long antennae-like tails at the rear ends of its hindwings. It is not scarce at all in spring and in summer in the sunnier parts of Central and Southern Europe at locations with blackthorn or other species of Prunus growing in the gardens and near the woods, and - above all: with less pesticides brought out in the gardens and fields than just a few decades ago.

Happy we are finally enjoying such a situation now in the suburbs and the green belt around Vienna.

The picture was taken under cool and partially clouded weather conditions at the edge of forest of the Vienna Woods. The circumstances demanded to "whip out my iPhone from my pocket like a cowboy ... whenever I feel the need to take a picture". (Ram Thakur)

The camera:
Apple iPhone 6, 3264x2448 pixels; sRGB, F/2.2, 1/425 sec., ISO-32, fixed focal length 4.2mm (equiv.29mm), point measuring; no flash.

Photoshop CS4, zoomed in to approx. 150%, cropped, brightness, contrast and saturation slightly adjusted, downsized to 800 pixels width, selectively resharpened, some noise reduction on parts of the background.

Thank you for your visit.
Enjoy your day.

Dedicated to our esteemed friend Mr. Ram Thakur.

Hello Peter,
Amazing that an IPhone could take such a well defined photo as this. What an eye catching image filled with beautiful color and wonderful detail. Looks very similar to the Tiger Swallowtails we have here in Ohio. Great job!!

Hello Peter,
Very beautiful photo of this butterfly, which I've photographed on Lesvos last week. But not in this quality, I only had my 600 mm lens with me. Sharpness and colors in this photo are amazing.

Hello Peyer,
Beautiful butterfly and nice PP work. Very nice exposure with perfect composition. Nice work....
Thanks and have a nice WE,

Hello Peter

excellent photo of this butterfly taken with the iPhone,
fine POV, being framed diagonally in the image it gives it dynamism,
excellent focus, sharpness, details, and contrast, TFS

Hi Peter,
Even this is "only" a photo made with a phone, everything's so nice on it: colors, sharpness, exposure... The composition's good as well, however I find the crop a bit too tight at right and at the bottom. Just a personal opinion, obviously - otherwise an excellent pic, no one would even think it was made with a telo... Congratulations!
Kind regards from Ireland, László
