Order: Lepidoptera

Superfamily: Papilionoidea

Family: Nymphalidae

Genus: Issoria

Species: I. lathonia

The Queen of Spain Fritillary (Issoria lathonia) is a butterfly of the Nymphalidae family. It is common in southern Europe, migrating as far north as south Scandinavia every summer. It is a very rare visitor to the British Isles. Heat-dependent, this species is found breeding on the hottest places of the foodplants of the larvae (prefers Viola tricolor and Viola arvensis). The adult is a strong flyer, and may be found anywhere but forests.
The eggs of this species are laid on the Wild Pansy ( Viola tricolor).

Hello Luciano,
The Queen of Spain deserves her right to be perched up high on her pedestal, she is quite a lovely lady. Shown wearing her best attire and standing upright and proud. Nicely focused and displaying fine detail. The lighting appears to have been a bit harsh on this particular day, but you managed the exposure perfectly. Well done!
