[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This butterfly normally flutters around ceaselessly and does not settle down to give a clear shot. This morning, however, this one was settled motionless on a leaf in the shade of a tree and did not even flinch when I moved my compact camera close to it for this and similar other shots.

The Common Castor (Ariadne merione) is an orange butterfly with brown lines whose larvae feed almost exclusively on Castor Ricinus communis. It is similar in appearance to Ariadne ariadne, the Angled Castor.

This species is found in south-eastern Asia. Their wingspan ranges between 30–35 mm. Like others in the Nymphalidae family, their front two legs are small and unused, effectively making them four-legged. These smaller appendages are covered with long hairs, giving them the characteristic brush look.

All over India, Simla to Sikhim in the Himalayas and recorded from Rajasthan, West Bengal, Assam, Burma and Malayan Sub-region.

Hello Ram,
Isn't it nice when your subjects seem to cooperate with you. I remark to people all the time while up at the marsh photographing birds. I wonder if they realize how happy they would make us if only they sit still for a few seconds and posed:)
Great shot of this beautifully marked butterfly. The burnt orange colors are so pretty and the focus is sharp revealing much detail. Exposure is perfect!
