[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I was racking my brain out trying to properly identify this caterpillar. I had never seen this particular type before and was stunned to find it munching on our pine tree needles. Yuck...they must have a pretty strong breath odor:(

The biggest problem with identifying the caterpillar of the Imperial Moth is that it has a number of color phases. The two main colors are a black-orange form or a green-yellow form with slight variations also found.

I believe this particular caterpillar was getting ready to pupate due to the very long silk like hairs covering its body. The photos I looked at in my guide book showed the hairs quite a bit shorter and there were four color phases.

I frantically searched the web until I came up with a photo just like mine, in which it was identified as an Imperial Moth Caterpillar. Problem solved!!!
