Leptura rubra is a longhorn beetle found in Europe, North Africa, and Asia as far as Siberia and northern Mongolia. It is far more common in hills and mountains than in the lowlands. Its body can reach a length of 10-19 mm. The wing covers of the males are yellowish-brown, whereas those of the female are orange/red. The upper parts of the legs are black, while the lower parts have the same colour as the wing covers. The torax is black in males, and orange/red in females (picture = female).
The larvae of this beetle live in dead wood of pine and fir trees, eating long tunnels through the wood for several years. The adult beetles are usually found on umbelliferous flowers; they feed on various flower parts. They are good fliers and can produce a grating sound.

Fantastic shot Hans, the DOF allows so much detail to be seen, excellent composition and nice note, thanks for sharing.

Very nice shot, Hans!
Good composition, DOF, lights, sharpness, and quality.
The hungarian name of this insect is: "cincÚr".
Nice work!

Good shot! You've captured an impressive amount of detail here, and I also really like the colours. On balance I'd have preferred the closest antenna to be sharp, but since you're already at f18 I guess it probably isn't possible. Informative note too. Well captured :-D

Splendid picture, Hans, Nice lens and F18 rocks, But the guy behind the camera must still know what to do! Well done. All die dalders is spandeer.

Excellent image, DOF is perfect, composition/backround are excellent. Only very very slight niggle is you have left some sensor dust marks on, but the image itself is fantastic.
