[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the caterpillar of a Vanessa atalanta in it's first instar.
It was the first time I saw this larva when I make a country observation at Sierra da Estrela, the highest mountain in Portugal, with my friends from TAGIS.
I often have the opportunity to observe the imago (adult insect) but not the caterpillar.
The larva of the Red admiral feeds on Nettles (Urtica dioica); False Nettle (Boehmeria cylindrica); Hops (Humulus lupulus) and Pellitory (Parietarria pennsylvanica). They tend to be fairly solitary in this stage of their development. For defensive purposes they use silk to close a leaf which they can then feed on in relative safety.
The caterpillar of the Red Admiral butterfly varies in colour. The young specimen is about 15mm long and the fully-developed specimen could reach 35 mm long.
The young caterpillar makes this distinctive (and typical) shelter. The larva bites the leaf in precise locations and then pulls the leaf together with a web. The leaf bends in a predictable shape to produce a shelter for its future development. A number of these shelters are made as the larva grows, and the final shelter for pupation is created by toppling the entire tip of a nettle plant.
Is an immigrant species.
It’s a common butterfly in Portugal that flies all over the year till 1600 meters of altitude.
In Portugal we have two or three generations.

I know it is not very a very sharp photo but its the one I have and I like to share with my friends from TN.

Amazing caterpillar, Paulo. I think caterpillars are wonderfully varied in their "decorations" to survive. Sharp details and good exposure and POV. Well done and TFS. : )

Hi Paulo,
An excellent shot of this caterpillar, soon to be a Red Admiral. It is amazing to me the variations of the caterpillars. They are more varied than the butterflies they produce. Nice shot!.

Good shot Paulo,
Good colour, detail and sharpness.
Well composed and good exposure.
Thanks for posting.

Personal assessment of the photo: very good. It is the first time I see this.
Capacity of evocation in me: strong.
Strong visual impact.
Aptness of the photo for the site: excellent.
Personal assessment of the note: complete.
Thank you very much Paulo Henrique.

Maravilhosa foto,
bom DOF e POV,

I've noticed that you have a lot of knowledge in Lepidoptera domain. And you do great photography. I have to find some time soon to browse and enjoy your photos.

Regards, Petru

Hi Paulo, good capture. Well done for getting this one. Are you certain of it's ID? I only ask as they confuse the hell out of me and I know there are a few similar. I think the photo is a little soft in focus and the composition is a little too centered for my tastes but as you say worth posting. Well done.

Olá paulo. Execlente captura, mágoa que o foco non sexa o melhor posibel, mais esta claramente justificado na nota. saúdos
