Glasswing Butterfly

I took this shot in Butterfly World outside Stellenbosh. It was hot and humid in the enclosure and I assume this is to match their natural habitat. Hot Damn hot I have to say. This Glasswing was in the dark patches of a shrub and I had to use slow shutter speeds on F8 to get proper exposure.

I see we are doing requests on this site, so this one is for Callie and Gerhard.

Glasswing Butterfly (Greta oto)

The Glasswing is one of a number of similar transparent winged butterflies. It comes from central America, and is found from Mexico to Panama. It is quite common in its zone, but it not easy to find because of its transparent wings, which is a natural camouflage mechanism.

The camera settings:

Focal Length: 228mm
F Stop: F/8
Shutter Speed: 1/6
ISO: 100
Tripod: Yes
Flash: Yes
Reflective Panel: No
Cable release: Yes

je n'ai jamais croisé cette espece...ce n'est pas l'envis qui me manque....
j'aime beaucoup les ailes transapantes de ce papillon !
domagge que la photo soit legerement floue ;)
belle capture quand meme.

Japie, I've never seen a butterfly with so much transparency to its wings. Remarkable species & it sounds like you had some "Hot Dame" good fun getting this one! ;-) thanx for posting!

Nice shot! I really love the colours and composition of this one. Your note is informative too. My only criticism is similar to Crypton's - it doesn't seem quite sharp, mind you at 1/6s it's not surprising, I think you did well to get it this sharp to be honest! Well captured :-D

I have seen some shots of this in in TN and they allways take my attention with the 4 legs and incredible shape. This one is very beautiful, the composition is good and de details of transparent wings perfect. Good work.

Very good picture. At 1/6 it's really nice.
Facinated by the wings....
Thank you !

Your pictures are so beautiful.
But also you have the chance of living in a exceptional country for nature photographs. Anyway without passion and talent, even if it was in a wonderful country, is not enough.
Good job, thanks for sharing.

love the wings, love the eyes and the focus is great. great job
