Spotted Eagle Owl (Bubo africanus)

The Spotted Eagle Owl is one of the smallest of the Eagle Owls. On average they weigh around one quarter of the weight of the largest of the Eagle Owl family, the Eurasian Eagle Owl.

The Spotted Eagle Owl is found throughout most Africa south of the Sahara, with the exception of very dense forests. Up until 1999, it was considered that there were two subspecies of Spotted Eagle Owl found in Africa, but one of the subspecies, (Bubo africanus cinerascens), is now treated as a separate species, the Vermiculated Eagle Owl (Bubo cinerascens).

The Spotted Eagle Owls hunt predominantly at dusk, spending most of the day concealed in trees, on rock ledges or even in burrows of other animals. They will take a large variety of prey, from small mammals, birds in flight, reptiles, scorpions, crabs, frogs, bats & insects. They are often seen hunting around streetlights in towns, which is where insects, & consequently bats hunting insects, tend to congregate at dusk.

Hi Stephen,

Excellent shot and well done on the details.
The composition would have been stronger if there was more space in front of the owl, IMO.

Hello Stephen,

Excellent details and very good colors. I have a nit about the composition though ... I think you should have left more space on the lefthandside. Other than that: great shot! 7/10 Well done & TFS!

Pieter

Hi Stephen

This does look like a wise old owl. He is standing tall and proud showing his lovely plumage. Nicely composed with good OOF BG. Thanks.

Superb shot Stephen!
This chap looks so lordly and is so beautiful that I just can't not to have him in my favs :)
The photo has good quality, but the sharp edges between the bird and blurred area around him are a bit distracting.
Anyway, as I aready said, I like it very much.
VERY WELL DONE & TFS

Can't type much... can look and click though... sorry for the short comment.

Wow, but this is so special! The sharpness and clarity are amazing. I also like your choice of frame.

SUPER!!

Shelly.

I am glad that my vote puts this one into the 40īs!
Excellent general quality, super composition.
The depth of the shot with the bird in foreround is surprising. Thanks very much Stephen.

It's defintaly the best Spotted Eagle Owl shot I've seen. The colors & the detail are so crisp & sharp.I do like the framing also, coz it makes it like a poster.Well done in capturing such a stunning & proud looking bird.

Well exposed but IMO overcropped. The bird should have somewhere to go not where it has been. In other words there should be more space in front of the bird than behind. Georgeous bird, just needs photographing in a more natural location.
Peter
