Greetings everyone. Still on my trip to Florida, but found a beach front internet cafe to get my TrekNature fix. Working off my laptop, so I hope this looks OK. This is a photo I shot at the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. If you are ever in South Florida, this is a must visit place if you are into nature photography.

Thee J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is located on the subtropical barrier island of Sanibel in the Gulf of Mexico. The refuge is part of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem in the United States. It is world famous for its spectacular migratory bird populations. J. N. "Ding" Darling is one of over 540 refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System administered by the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service

The bird is a "White Ibis"

Range: North and South America, West Indies
Habitat: Marshes, mangroves, lakes, lagoons, swamps
Conservation Status: Not listed by IUCN
Scientific Name: Eudocimus albus

This sociable wading bird is quite common in many parts of its range. It roosts and feeds in flocks, and nests in large colonies, often with birds of other species.

White ibises spend most of their day foraging in shallow water for crabs, crayfish, insects, snails, frogs, snakes, and small fish. They find their prey by wading slowly and probing the mud and water carefully with their long, curved bill.

The birds build their nests in low trees and thickets, from two to 15 feet off the ground. Both male and female cooperate in building the nest, which is usually a platform of sticks, grass, or reeds. The female lays two to three eggs, which hatch after three weeks.

Young white ibises are dark brown with a white belly and rump. Their parents feed them by regurgitating food from their stomachs. They start making short flights after four or five weeks, and by seven weeks are old enough to begin foraging with the colony.

Glad to see you back in action :-)
The picture looks great. I like the dark water and the ripple effect of the water created by the ibis beak.
Excellent picture.

Hi Scott,

Great shot. Well composed and exposed. I just love the wrinkles in the water and the reflection. Well done & TFS!

Outstanding shot, Scott! Incredible colors, superb contrast. I would say that just the water wavelets are worth the picture. The white Ibis in the middle is superb too, although I prefer the neck and bill than the whole animal. Have you thought of cropping it and off-center the head? (see ws)

This picture belongs in a Natinal Geographic Magazine. The ripples are unbelievable and the sharpness is dead-on. the dark blue of the water is mystifying and rich, I cannot believe the the contrasts of the face of the White Ibis and the water. Good capture of him dipping for some food. You handled the whites well, so well in fact that you captured the gray colors on him too. I'm glad you got to go to Florida, I knew you'd get some great shots. This one is a masterpiece.
Thanks for sharing it.

Hi Scott,
Superb photo! everything is done skillfuly. My complements!

Wow, Scott! Beautiful shot. I like Ibises a lot. Some years ago I also did a photo-safari on Florida swamps photographing ibises. It was in pre-digital era, unfortunately. But hopefully I'll do another one next May :-)

Anyway, beautiful contrast, great exposure and fantastic pattern of the water surface.
Best greetings!

Beautiful Ibis with excellent reflections on the dark water. Well done.
