An Ice Bird
Ring-Billed Gull (young)
Larus delawarensis

...The Ring-billed Gull is our most common gull and looking at how their numbers have increased over the last half century, we see that this species has readily taken advantage of some the changes man has made to the environment. It likes to eat garbage, a.k.a. French fries. Of course they eat fish but they also spend a lot of time feeding in freshly plowed fields looking for earthworms and grubs. It seems that you cannot find a farmer working the fields without him being followed by a flock of hungry Ring-billed gulls....
...Birds have a number of adaptations to cold and one of the most important is called “reté mirable” meaning miracle network. Birds have a special circulation system in their feet and legs. The artery bringing warm blood into the foot is surrounded by what looks like a mesh stocking of veins that brings the blood back from the foot. This network of veins surrounding the artery acts as a heat exchanger. The warmth in the arterial blood going to the foot is absorbed by the cold blood returning from the foot so that by the time the blood leaves the leg and heads back into the body it is almost body temperature. The warm blood in the arteries is around 4 degrees Celsius by the time it gets into the foot...

Brrrr, Luc. Is it really that cold in Montreal already?
i was out all day in my t-shirt and took some butterfly pictures. Your ice gull does not seem to mind the shards of ice on the water. A very "cold" picture indeed. Well done and TFS. : )

Hello Luc,

The picture is very nice. Particularly I like the pieces of ice on the water. They add special winter flavour :-) to the scene.
Thanks,
Michal

Hi Luc

This gull looks lonely. Nicely composed. Good light with great exposure. Crisp, clear sharp details. I love the reflection being mosaiced (if there is such a word) by the ice which looks like broken glass floating on the water. Nice work. TFS.

Hi Luc!
You take wonderful photos of water. It's amazing to look at that.

Brrr I like the ice in the water. I have to laugh Luc, I go out into the hot desert and you down to the cold river!! wildlife is everywhere.
Very nice composition, clarity and I like the reflection.

The gull is a beauty. Well composed, good details and nice colours.

Hi Luc,
Always amazing how animals are so well adapted to their environment that weather is not much of a factor. We look at this and feel cold, and he is just fine. Excellent shot with a nice reflection in the icey water. Detail and clarity are excellent. Nice Shot!

It does look so cold Luc. Ice on the water! It is good how these birds do adapt to conditions (very interesting notes), whereas I'd just freeze and not get out of bed, I think. I don't know snow at all, apart from a skiing holiday many years ago.
Good shot, dull cold colours, so real and true. Brrr, too cold for me.
TFS and have a good weekend Luc. It's wet and windy here right now.
Cheers, Janice

Sorry so late in the game to comment on this fabulous picture Luc, very nice water texture with a nice exposure. :)

I'll return to award you well deserved points & smiley.
