This was a tree that caught my eye whilst hiking in Scotland many years ago (about 13-14 years ago) when I was at uni. The tree was a remnant of the Caledonia Forest which covered much of the highlands at one point in time. Most of it has now gone.

The nearest road (4 or 5 miles of single track dead end road) is a 4 hour walk away. The loch is Loch Dochard, in Glen Kinglass, just south of Rannoch Moor.

I re-visited it some 10 years later, to find the top had gone in the spring storms that very year (it was in the loch). Maybe tomorrow, I'll post that one...

The photo was taken on my old Canon T80 with the 28-50mm lens, then scanned in and edited. The photo needed some noise reduction, there was a lot of noise in the sky, so I ran a selective noise reduction on the sky. I've also increased the saturation slightly and sharpened the picture using USM.

I don't know any of the details for camera settings, but remember that it was taken free hand with me close to the ground to elevate the tree above the mountain line. I got a very wet knee in the process, but it was most definitley worth it.

Hope you like it. It's one of my favourites and is framed and has centre stage in the sitting room.

Hi Emma,

Beautiful capture and well done on the composition and details.

Mike

cuudoooooooo!!!!!!!!!

Nice landscape. Excellent composition. This scene is just made to be photographed and you made it look good.

The focus on the tree is slightly soft, but I can live with it.

Excellent shot

good composition and really natural colors. I find the tree a bit soft on focus but this doesn't 'spoil' the pic.
Great job

It takes a lot for a thumbnail of a landscape shot to catch my attention - this one did immediately. Nicely composed - the tree "makes" the shot. I'm assuming the softness is just a result of the scanning process. Beautiful place.
Thanks, Nigel.

A truly lovely view, nice distributed lighting, good colors and excellent contrast.

Hello Emma,

I can see why it would be a favorite, how beautiful it is.

And considering the process that you took to get it from a photo to us, makes it all the more impressive.

Wonderful countryside with its ancient hillsides and last lone tree standing by the water's edge.

Fantastic job, and great composition!

Thank you for taking the time and sharing it with us.

Hello!! Great composition! Beautiful colours. Good shot! Well done. ;O)

Hello Emma,
amazing landscape; sharpness, soft colors, light, composition, everything is good! TFS:)

Hi Emma,
I love this view, seems to be a little cold, but so quiet and peaceful.
On TrekLens there is a challenge with special themes and they search "a lonely tree".
This would be perfect for it :-)
So thanks for your beautiful post, bye

Hi Emma, I like this alot. It really compounds the lonliness of the tree. The composition is excellent and the form of the tree is very interesting.

Great shot.

Hi Emma, I think its a stunning shot. Excellent POV, especially the tree in the front. Colours are well balanced and very nice lighting. Too me this kind of shots are hard to handle and its difficult to do a choose a good POV.
Also I like the way you show us this country, bit an african style.
I put it to my favourites for my own learning experience.
Thanks for sharing and keep them comming.
Reina

The composition is just stunning. It sounds like it was a great effort just to get there, let alone take the photo.
The colours seem a little muted, that is probably due to the scanning process, though.

this is my favourite as well..
more power to you...
cheers

ps i got another click on the sharpen button before the artifacts appeared...but i know this is a pic scan..and i cant get really sharp controllable shots from my scanner

This tree should catch everyones eye when they pass this spot - what a unique tree it is. How sad to be one of the last of the Caledonia Forest.
And I am so pleased you have this one framed in your home Emma, it is wonderful, thank you

Hi Emma,

This is a beautiful capture, lovely contrats. The sky is a bit overexposed, may be if you had used a circular polarizer the colours would have been more effective. TFS

Hi Emma,

I really like the simplicity of the composition in this shot. I thought I'd have a play around with some of the functions of photoshop to see how different one photo can look with different post processing techniques. I've posted a workshop. Let me know what you think.

Hi Emma,
magnificent landscape and very impressive mist atmosphere!
Great!

Dear Emma,
I spent in 2006 two eventful weeks in Scotland. Eventful in the sense of beauty, peace, crisp air and Scottish atmosphere.

Your photo encompasses all this plus the surprise of a giant Bonsai.

The natural colours resembling a 19th century painting - found in a gallery - yield the same sort of feeling.

I also like the gentle frame emphasising nature's frailty.

A beautiful image, beautiful presented - I wish to admire at will - and therefore add it to my favorites.

Have a nice evening
Kind regards
Ingrid
