Hen and Chicken Islands (Taranga & Marotiri Islands)

This is for Luc, who hasn't seen the sea since he was 12 years old - not so long ago Luc! So enjoy it my friend.

The bay here is Pacific Bay that can be reached either around the rocks from Tutukakaís Pacific Resort Motelís private beach, or by a walking track at the entrance to the motel. That is where I took this photo from.It is pedestrian access only. The beach is safe for swimming at all stages of the tide. There is a pontoon to swim out to and moorings for the guest's small craft. It is possible to walk from one beach to the other around the rocks at low tide.

I was a little confused seeing these islands you can see in the distance from Tutukaka, north east of Whangarei, because I knew they were positioned south of Whangarei. I have always noticed them as I have riven north from home to Whangarei. But I know realise that I am looking south east here, and these tiny islands you can see on the horizon are the Hen and Chicks.

Taranga Island (The Hen) is the largest island of the group. It has a conspicuous double peak at its highest point named The Pinnacles . The water around this island is very deep along with the sides of the island being very steep.

Anchorage and landing (with permission) is possible at Witches Cove. The deep, blue water close into the shoreline, coupled with the birds singing, make this anchorage worthwhile when possible. Connected with a short passage across from Smugglers Bay on the mainland you can imagine all sorts of sea stories.

Sail Rock just to the south is a very visible landmark even from the main north highway from Auckland to Whangarei and is a common mark used for yacht racing. Sail Rock is shaped just like a yachtís sail.

Marotiri Islands (The Chickens) consists of four separate islands lying east to west of each other and to the north of Taranga Island. All these islands are wildlife sanctuaries and require permission to land on.

The four islands in the group are from west to east named Mauitaha Island, Lady Alice Island, Wharupuke Island and Coppermine Island .

Tutukaka is a major base for diving trips to the Poor Knights Islands, New Zealand's best dive location. 24km off the Tutukaka Coast, the warm waters of the reserve harbour a huge variety of tropical and subtropical fish varieties, and the clear water provides good visibility. The Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve contains underwater cliffs, fissures, rock archways, caves and tunnels, all packed with rainbow-coloured fish, soft corals, shellfish and kelp forest.

Sorry folks, my broadband internet is broken and Iím back on dial-up connection and it is VERY slow. Iíll try and visit as many as I can, but will catch you up when all is fixed.

yes Janice,
I said it before you live in a beautiful country. The composition is nice with the good depth and the sea side, very good job.

Hi Janice,
Excellent capture, good sharp detail and colours. Great POV.
Nicely composed and good exposure.
Thanks for posting. Have a great weekend.

I hope you get your connection sorted soon...

Wonderful view of the open sea bordered in green. Very well composed with an excellent balance of FG, cliffs and sea. Perfect light and color. Very well done!

Hi Janice,
I am envious of the beautiful scenery that you have so readily available to you. I traveled 1300 miles to get to the beach in Florida.(It was worth it) The exposure is right on the money here. Beautiful colors, and the depth and clarity are perfect. Awesome shot!

Hello Janice,
